Route 2: Direct Shuttle from Antigua to Lanquín

Several companies now offer direct shuttles from Antigua to Lanquín, eliminating the Cobán transfer:

  • Price: Q250-350 ($33-46)
  • Duration: 8-10 hours (with stops)
  • Departure: Usually 8:00 AM, arrives 4-6 PM
  • Companies: Adrenalina Tours, GuateGo, hostel-organized shuttles

This is the best option for most travelers. One vehicle, one ticket, no transfers. You'll still feel every bump on that last stretch of road, but at least you're not juggling connections.

Route 3: From Flores/Tikal

Coming from Flores (after visiting Tikal)? This is a long haul:

  • Shuttle: Q300-400 ($40-53), 8-10 hours
  • Route: Flores → Sayaxché → Cobán → Lanquín (or via Raxruhá)
  • Warning: Some of these roads are unpaved. In rainy season (May-October), they can be impassable

The Road Situation: What to Actually Expect

The road from Cobán to Lanquín deserves its own section because it's... something.

  • The first 40 km from Cobán are paved and fine
  • The last 25 km turn into a dirt/gravel road that winds through mountains
  • In dry season: bumpy but manageable
  • In rainy season: muddy, slippery, occasionally washed out
  • Motion sickness is common — take Dramamine if you're susceptible
  • The views, however, are absolutely spectacular
Pro tip: Sit in the front if you get motion sick. And eat a light breakfast.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Don't try to do Semuc Champey as a day trip from Antigua. Here's the recommended itinerary:

  • Day 1: Travel from Antigua/Guatemala City to Lanquín (arrive afternoon/evening)
  • Day 2: Full day at Semuc Champey + Kan'Ba caves (the main tour)
  • Day 3 (optional): Second day for tubing on the Cahabón River or revisiting the pools
  • Day 3/4: Travel to next destination (Flores, Cobán, or back to Antigua)
Minimum: 2 nights in Lanquín. One night means you're exhausted from travel and rushed at the pools.

  • Hostal Vista Verde: Budget option in town. Basic but cheap. Q50-80.

Essential Tips

  • Bring water shoes — the rocks in the pools are slippery
  • Waterproof bag for your phone/camera is essential
  • Arrive early (before 10 AM) to have the pools more to yourself
  • Hike to El Mirador — the viewpoint above the pools. Steep 20-min climb, absolutely worth it
  • Don't swim in the river below the pools — the current is dangerously strong
  • Bring cash — there are no ATMs in Lanquín. Stock up in Cobán
  • Bug spray — the jungle has mosquitoes, especially at dusk
  • Rainy season (May-Oct) — pools may be muddier but fewer tourists

Is It Worth the Effort?

Absolutely yes. Semuc Champey is one of those places that lives up to the hype. The turquoise pools, the jungle setting, the caves, the sense of earning the experience through a challenging journey — it all adds up to something unforgettable.

Is it easy to get to? No. Is it comfortable? Not particularly. Is it one of the most beautiful places you'll ever see? Without question.
